Running the Planning Workshop 

  • This is a group activity you could do as part of an existing meeting or as a dedicated workshop. It will be most effective if you can involve a range of staff involved with delivering or supporting academic skills provision. 
  • To run this workshop activity, you may find it helpful to print out hard copies of the following documents:

  • The workshop activities below are designed to take approximately 60 to 90 minutes depending on group size.

5 minutes 

Each member of the group should read through the Self-Evaluation Checklist. Have a copy of the guide to hand in case colleagues want clarification about any of the checklist items.  

10 minutes 

In pairs or small groups, rate your college against each of the ten items. As you do so, see if you can identify any specific examples of practice. 

20 minutes 

Discuss and agree the three main items you have identified as needing work that could most benefit your students’ academic skills development. When deciding these, you might find it helpful to reflect on the types of diversity that exist among your students and common barriers to learning. 

5 minutes 

Choose the item you want to prioritise first for your action planning. You might use a simple show of hands for an informal vote, or you could draw out a consensus by writing down the options, providing each group member with three coloured dots or stickers, and asking them to place these next to their preferred options.  

20 minutes 

In your group, refer to the guide and read the full prompt for this item. Consider how you could follow up on the suggested actions recommended in the guide. Use the Action Planner below to record agreed actions. 

If you have time, do this for the next item that you prioritised, and so on, working through each priority item.
